THE A. LIST HITS THE 2010 WORLD CUP

Why? Because the world's biggest sporting event has come to South Africa -- and we're there.

Joburg doesn't really know what it's going to do once the World Cup ends. It has found itself on a platform of absolute euphoria, and the city has revelled in it. The streets have been filled with the horns of cars and toots of the vuvuzela, so much so that it is possible to not watch a game and still know when a goal is scored. The vuvuzela is a bit of a town-crier in that sense...

But we digress. This week, the A. List chose Six on 7th Street in Melville as our base. 7th Street in Melville finds itself to be a hub of Joburg's media and student crowd, where ideas are pushed and ideals formed. Six seems to be the bar for Joburg's young professionals looking for an after-work drink, and its strong urban grooves and equally strong cocktails set the background for a social scene that is quintessentially Joburg.

GAME OF THE WEEK
NETHERLANDS vs. SPAIN

Why? Two sides, both too good for each other, are bound to provide for an exhilarating final.

We thought there was going to be a Netherlands / Germany final, but it turned out that the Spanish were too strong. As such, there is a good chance they'll hold out against the Oranje on Sunday -- they were, after all, the favourite going in. Either way, neither team has been in a World Cup final, and the game is sure to end off an entire World Cup of firsts.

Sunday, July 11th at 8:30 p.m.

HOTEL OF THE WEEK
THE SOWETO HOTEL

Why? Because it's good to stay in the thick of kasi culture.

Through years of hardship, solidarity and change, Soweto has developed its own distinct urban identity: "kasi culture" is hip, new and edgy, and encapsulated in South African kwaito music. The Soweto Hotel reflects this energy in its design, and we found its location on Kliptown Square to be an interesting interplay between the many facets of Joburg.

RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
THE LOCAL GRILL

Why? Because it's a big steak for a big city.

Joburg is filled with its fair share of steak houses, but we think that The Grill House is the slickest of the lot. We're always game for a medium-rare rump steak, but the choice of meat really is yours. With a good bottle of South African wine on the side, an evening at The Grill House will ground your senses and reorientate you in this crazy city.
